We're getting close

October 2nd

Thanks very much to all of you who have already supported the Taxi Replacement Campaign. We are getting close to our $42,000 goal, and now we have a chance to race toward the finish line. Our success in meeting the first $5000 Challenge Grant has been followed by a second donor supporting a new $3500 Challenge!

If we meet this Challenge with $3500 in individual donations before December 1st, the $3500 match will get us to $42,000 and we will truly be able to purchase a vehicle worthy of Maine winters and the island roads.

A message from Cynthia and Howard Pedlikin reminded us how important a community resource the taxi is:

So glad that people are stepping forward to help. The taxi is so important. This summer we have discovered just how important. I have used it many times to get to and from the ferry when Howard was in the hospital. Now we use it because Howard is not able to drive. The Visiting Nurse and therapists use the taxi all the time. They know the drivers by name and the drivers have given them great service.

We couldn't have made the point better ourselves. The Taxi is a community effort. Though you may not depend on it today, we want to be sure it is there when you do need it and that it continues to serve your neighbors who rely on it now.

A new challenge grant

August 21st

Success! Thank you Peaks Island for making the "Taxi Replacement Rendez-vous" on August 20th a fun evening and a great fundraising success. Those who attended enjoyed a wide range of hors d'oeuvres prepared by Thurl Headen and were able to participate in a silent auction of fabulous desserts donated by some of our island's best bakers.

Due to your generous donations, we were able to announce that it met its $5000 challenge grant in mid-August, pushing the heat on the thermometer up to $35,000. We still have a little way to go to meet our final goal.

Thanks to the generosity of another Peaks Islander, we have a new challenge grant. This one is for $3500. By meeting this challenge, we will attain its overall goal of $42,000.

Please donate here or mail a check to:

Remember that the taxi is a 501(c)3 organization and your donation will be matched dollar for dollar if we meet the challenge grant of $3500.

Raffle launches taxi replacement campaign

June 2

Many thanks to Bob Hannigan, who allowed us to sell tickets in front of the market all weekend, to Judy Piawlock and Chris Bearce who enthusiastically helped Taxi Board members sell raffle tickets despite the cold and windy weather, to Abbott Trefethen Kelley who selected the winning ticket, and to all others who participated in our annual 50%-50% cash raffle by buying tickets.

We collected $1666 and half goes to Joseph Vitanva of Cold Spring, N.Y., who purchased the winning ticket. The winner received the news by phone upon arriving in Portland with his car after waiting in Monday's extra-long car ferry line a bit longer than anticipated!

Those of you who visited the raffle table in front of Hannigan's now know that we need to raise an additional $15,000 to $20,000 to complement PIC funding of $22,000 so we can purchase a replacement vehicle in 2018. A generous donor has offered us a $5000 challenge grant to speed us along. To benefit from this grant, we need to raise $5000 in donations before Thanksgiving. We are a tax exempt (501(c) 3) organization, so you can help the taxi and reduce your taxes at the same time! Please help us reach this goal via PayPal or by mailing a check to the Island Transportation System at P.O. Box 14, Peaks Island. When you go to the website, don't forget to look at the parking information too, so you can encourage visiting friends to park in Portland and avoid sitting in another line like we saw on Monday!

Every donation, no matter how big or small, will help. Remember, even if you are not a frequent taxi user, keeping it running for others who are is important to all of us.

Moving Up to a New Taxi

May 26

The Taxi Board is pleased to announce the launch of a major fundraising campaign Memorial Day Weekend (May 27-29th). In addition to our annual 50-50 cash raffle with tickets sold in front of Hannigan's during the entire weekend, we are announcing a $5000 Challenge Grant offered by an anonymous donor who wants to help us meet our goal of replacing the current taxi by 2018. We need to raise $5000 from individual and business donors between May 27th and Thanksgiving Day to trigger an additional $5000 from this generous supporter. The raffle receipts will count toward the goal, so don't forget to come by Hannigan's and get your tickets.

In addition, we are encouraging all to donate what they can for the replacement fund via PayPal, or by mailing a check to the Island Transportation System, P.O. Box 14, Peaks Island, ME 04108. The Peaks Taxi (ITS) is a 501(c)3 tax exempt organization, so your donation can keep the taxi running and help you reduce your taxes.

More information about the fundraising campaign will be available at the raffle table, which will be operating from 9 am to 5 pm Saturday and Sunday, and until 1 pm on Monday. Remember, even if you are not a frequent user of the taxi, keeping it running for those times when you do need it is important to all of us.

Taxi down time planned

April 28

Our taxi is in need of repairs that will require two separate trips to Portland.

We have scheduled them for the next two Mondays: May 1st and May 8th. If all goes as planned, the taxi will be back in service the following Tuesdays and should be ready to ride out the summer without further trips to Portland.

Many thanks to our riders for their patience as we take care of these repairs.

Moving Up to a New Taxi

April 21

The Taxi Board is calling all islanders to get on board for a major fundraising campaign that will start Memorial Day Weekend. The goal is to replace the current vehicle with a new one in 2018. This decision was made after a thorough review of recent and anticipated repair costs.

To accomplish this we need to bring our vehicle replacement fund (now approaching $22,000 thanks to support from the Peaks Island Council) up to at least $32,000 – the estimated cost of a new vehicle. We will launch the campaign with our annual 50-50 raffle in front of Hannigan's on May 27th-29th. Each raffle ticket you purchase will get us a little bit closer to a new vehicle, so put it on your calendar and join the fun. More details to follow on the list-serves and in next month's STAR on other fundraising activities now in the planning stage.

Thanks to ALL for the Andy's Support

April 14

We are pleased to announce that the taxi added $688 to its coffers at the Andy's Old Port Pub fundraiser on April 11th. Many thanks to the businesses, volunteers, musicians, and attendees who made the evening a great success.
